9,00 h. departure to Rila Monastery, the most famous monument of Bulgarian architecture and history, a stronghold of the Orthodox religion and Slavic culture is included in UNESCO’s world heritage list. Located in the magnificent surroundings of Rila Mountain at 120 km from Sofia at 1147 m above sea level. It was founded in the 30 years of X century by the monk - hermit John of Rila (Ivan Rilski) and his pupils. In the Middle ages many Bulgarian nobles and kings were bounty generous to the monastery. It survived many fires and attacks. Take your time to examine the monastery - the main church, the museum, the guest rooms, the monastery cookhouse. The buildings are decorated with murals and are open to the inner court with balconies accommodating premises with different purpose. One of the most impressing ones is the Magernitsa (the monastery cookhouse) - a massive tower passing through the 4 floors ending with a dome over the roof. In 1837 in the yard was erected the richly decorated church Virgin Mary. The frescoes on the walls are showing over 1200 scenes and images and the altar iconostasis of tracery woodcarving is entirely gilt. The relics of St. John of Rila are kept here. 13,30 h – Lunch in a cozy mountain restaurant on set menu of dishes by monastery recipes. In the afternoon drive back to Sofia and arrival at the hotel about 16,30 – 17,00 h.
